Dewan Gabriel, who was previously tipped as a strong contender after reportedly obtaining the nomination form on the platform of the Young Peoples Party, said he has now opted to step down from the senatorial ambition.
Instead, the lawmaker stated that he will seek re-election into the Plateau State House of Assembly, where he currently serves as a representative of Pankshin North.
In a statement titled “Positive Impact to Humanity Phase 2, Pankshin North 2027,” Gabriel said the decision followed extensive consultations with family members, political stakeholders, supporters, youths, elders and associates within his constituency.
He explained that the move was influenced by ongoing political discussions around the Senate seat in the PKK zone, the position of his party as an opposition platform, and the need to preserve unity and collective interest.
The former Speaker described his withdrawal as a sacrifice made in the interest of peace and inclusiveness, adding that he did not want to be perceived as an obstacle to the aspirations of the Ngas people regarding the senatorial position.
He also reaffirmed his opposition to any third-term agenda within the zone, stressing his continued support for efforts aimed at resisting tenure extension in local political arrangements.
