Ebonyi curfew lifted after deadly Amasiri clash as government reopens schools and hospitals while maintaining security presence

Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru on Monday announced that the state government has lifted a months-long curfew imposed on Amasiri community following a deadly boundary conflict with Okporojo in Edda Local Government Area.

The Ebonyi curfew lifted decision was reached after a State Security Council meeting presided over by Francis Nwifuru in Abakaliki, signalling a cautious but decisive return to normalcy in the affected areas.

The dusk-to-dawn restriction had been in place since February 2026 after violent clashes between Amasiri in Afikpo Local Government Area and Okporojo in Edda LGA left at least four people dead in a brutal episode that heightened tensions across the region.

In a statement issued by Chief Press Secretary Monday Uzor, the government confirmed that the curfew had been fully lifted, allowing residents to resume normal activities.

Director of the Department of State Services, Eneh Kolawale, said the order takes immediate effect and includes the reopening of schools and healthcare facilities.

Eneh Kolawale added that security personnel would remain deployed to sustain peace and prevent any resurgence of violence.

State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ben Odoh, said the decision followed signs of remorse and reconciliation efforts by the affected communities, describing the move as a necessary step towards lasting stability.

In a related development, Ben Odoh confirmed that the proposed delisting of Amasiri Development Centre had been rejected after appeals from community elders.

Ben Odoh said a formal communication would be sent to the State Assembly, maintaining the total number of development centres at 64.

Head of Service Rita Okoro said directives had been issued for the immediate reopening of public institutions and the recall of civil servants previously redeployed due to the crisis.

Commissioner for Information Ikeuwa Omebe assured residents that the government remains committed to safeguarding lives and property, even as normalcy gradually returns.

The Ebonyi curfew lifted marks a significant turning point for the communities, though authorities continue to emphasise vigilance as peace-building efforts take hold.
