Flying Eagles head coach Abdu Maikaba has charged Nigeria’s U-20 team to show determination and discipline as they compete for a place at the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations through the WAFU B U-20 Championship.
The regional tournament, scheduled to take place in Côte d’Ivoire, will bring together some of West Africa’s strongest youth teams, including hosts Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Benin Republic, Togo and Niger Republic.

Maikaba said the squad possesses the ability to compete at the highest level but warned that individual talent must be matched with commitment and a strong mentality.
“I have great confidence in this squad’s potential, but talent alone will not guarantee success,” Maikaba wrote on X.
“To compete against some of West Africa’s youth teams, my players must combine their ability with discipline, hard work, and a winning mentality.”
The Flying Eagles will be aiming to continue Nigeria’s strong record in the competition after winning the last two editions of the tournament.
Nigeria defeated Ghana 2-1 in the final of the previous edition held in Lomé, Togo, securing another regional title and reinforcing the country’s reputation as a major force in youth football.
The upcoming competition carries added importance as it provides a pathway to the continental stage, with teams fighting for qualification to the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.

Maikaba believes preparation, focus and teamwork will be crucial as the Flying Eagles seek to overcome a competitive field and maintain Nigeria’s dominance at the youth level.
