Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice Zuwaira Yusuf held that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, stating that Abdulaziz Umar was guilty on all counts, including criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, culpable homicide, and brigandage.
Umar convicted and sentenced to death in Kano robbery trial case stems from an incident on October 1, 2020, when Mubarak Salisu was attacked at about 6:00pm in the Race Course area of Badawa, Kano, and robbed of a Samsung handset valued at ₦100,000 before being fatally stabbed.
Court records revealed that Umar carried out the attack alongside several accomplices identified as Muyi, Umar Sarki, Diga, Ashosho, and Taduke, who remain at large.
During the trial, the prosecution counsel, Aisha Salisu of the Kano State Ministry of Justice, presented four witnesses whose testimonies directly implicated the defendant.
The defence counsel, Ya’u Abdullahi Umar, called only the defendant to testify in his own defence.
The court noted that the attackers conspired, used a knife during the robbery, and inflicted fatal injuries on the victim, fully aware that such actions could lead to death.
Justice Yusuf subsequently imposed the death penalty by hanging, in line with provisions of the Kano State Penal Code Law, bringing a decisive conclusion to the case.
