British Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday, bringing an end to a turbulent two-year premiership after growing pressure from within his own party and a series of damaging political setbacks.

Standing outside 10 Downing Street, Keir Starmer said he had accepted that Labour no longer viewed him as the right person to lead the party into the next general election.
“I accept with good grace that my party no longer believes I am the best person to lead them into the next general election,” Starmer said in an emotional resignation speech.
He added that he would remain in office until a successor is chosen to ensure an orderly transfer of power.
The resignation follows weeks of mounting unrest within Labour, with ministers, parliamentary aides and MPs openly questioning Starmer’s leadership after a series of heavy local election losses across England, Scotland and Wales.
The growing rebellion significantly weakened his authority and fuelled calls for a change at the top.
A key turning point came after several senior figures resigned from government positions, intensifying concerns about Labour’s direction and electoral prospects.
Critics argued that the party lacked a compelling vision at a time when voters were demanding stronger leadership and clearer policy priorities.
Despite stepping down, Starmer defended his record in office. The outgoing prime minister pointed to economic improvements, stronger workers’ rights, reduced National Health Service waiting lists and increased defence spending as achievements of his administration.
“I never came into politics for power itself,” Starmer said, reflecting on his time in government and emphasising his commitment to public service.
One of the more personal moments of the announcement came when Starmer paid tribute to his family and signalled a shift in priorities after leaving office.
“I will now focus on being the best husband and father I can be,” he said.
Attention has now turned to who will succeed him. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is widely viewed as the frontrunner in the forthcoming Labour leadership contest, with nominations expected to open in July.
If unchallenged, Burnham could take over as prime minister within weeks.
The resignation marks another dramatic chapter in a period of political instability in Britain.
Since the Brexit era began, the country has experienced an unusually rapid turnover of prime ministers, reflecting deeper shifts in the political landscape and growing voter dissatisfaction with traditional parties.
The announcement also sparked discussion surrounding comments made by US President Donald Trump a day earlier suggesting Starmer’s departure was imminent.
While some supporters pointed to the prediction after the resignation became official, there is no public evidence that Trump possessed insider knowledge of Labour’s internal deliberations.
Reports before the announcement had already indicated growing expectations that Starmer could step down amid escalating pressure.
For a leader who secured a landslide election victory in 2024 and promised to restore Labour’s fortunes, the end came far sooner than many expected.

His departure underscores the formidable political pressures that can quickly reshape leadership in modern British politics.
