The incident was confirmed in a statement by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
“Preliminary briefings reveal that a heavily laden truck travelling from the Epe axis experienced a catastrophic brake failure near Eleko Junction,” the statement said.
“The loss of control caused the truck to collide forcefully with the Toyota saloon, overturning and crushing the smaller vehicle.”
LASTMA and the Federal Road Safety Corps, aided by bystanders, rescued the victims.
The motorist was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The truck driver reportedly fled immediately after the crash.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, described the crash as preventable and called on motorists and truck operators to ensure proper vehicle maintenance and avoid reckless driving.
