France captain Kylian Mbappe marked his milestone 100th international appearance with two goals to guide his side to a convincing 3-0 victory over Iraq in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group I encounter at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Monday 22 June.
Ousmane Dembele added the third goal for the tournament favourites, who had opened their campaign with a 3-1 win against Senegal.
The result ensures France have already qualified for the last 32 with one group match remaining.
A powerful thunderstorm brought a two-hour delay at half-time, with France already leading through Mbappe’s early strike.
Fans were forced to seek shelter as torrential rain swept over the largely open stadium, in line with strict local safety rules. It was the first weather-related interruption of the tournament.
Mbappe, aged 27, broke the deadlock in the 14th minute with a fierce 20-metre shot.
After the lengthy break, an unfortunate error by Iraq gifted the French their second goal shortly after the restart, and Dembele sealed the win on 66 minutes.
The Real Madrid forward now boasts 16 World Cup goals, level with Germany’s Miroslav Klose and just two behind Lionel Messi’s record tally.
He has also reached 60 goals for France, having recently become the nation’s outright record scorer.
“In the second half, we were completely in control,” Mbappe said afterwards. “Putting the result beyond doubt is a very good thing; we’ve qualified tonight.”
Iraq, returning to the World Cup for the first time since 1986, showed spirit early on but were ultimately outclassed.
Captain Aymen Hussein was forced off injured before half-time, compounding their difficulties after an opening 4-1 defeat to Norway. They have now lost all five of their World Cup matches.
France manager Didier Deschamps rotated his squad, bringing in Bradley Barcola, Manu Kone and Lucas Digne, and the changes had little impact on the team’s fluency.
The victory sets up a compelling Group I decider against Erling Haaland’s Norway in Boston on Friday.
For Iraq, the challenge of competing at this level after such a long absence was clear, yet their players can take some pride from moments of organisation against one of the world’s strongest teams.
Mbappe’s clinical display once again underlined his status as one of the game’s premier talents and a driving force for this French side.
