NDLEA destroys N301bn illicit drugs in Lagos

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, led by its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), has destroyed 329,865.585 kilogrammes of assorted illicit drugs valued at an estimated N301.058 billion in Lagos, following orders of the Federal High Court, Lagos Judicial Division.

The court-ordered exercise, conducted on Monday, covered narcotics linked to uncontested concluded cases as well as abandoned seizures that had remained in the agency’s custody.

The scale of the destruction was striking. The NDLEA said 246,864.535kg of the drugs were seized by its Lagos Strategic Command between April 2025 and May 2026.

A further 83,001.05kg came from operations involving the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Tin Can and Apapa commands, the Marine Command and a Special Operations Unit operating within Lagos.

The substances destroyed included cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and different strains of cannabis, including Canadian Loud and skunk.

The consignment also contained ephedrine, tramadol, codeine syrup, other opioids and khat leaves.

Speaking during the destruction exercise, Marwa described the operation as a significant demonstration of Nigeria’s determination to deprive criminal networks of resources that could fuel the illicit drug trade.

“That is over N301 billion that will never find its way into the pockets of drug barons or into the ruining of a single Nigerian home,” Marwa said.

The NDLEA chairman said the significance of the exercise extended beyond the financial value of the substances. Each kilogramme, he noted, represented a potential threat to individuals, families and communities through addiction and related social harm.

Marwa also linked drug trafficking with wider security concerns, arguing that the proceeds of the illegal trade can help sustain organised criminal networks and other forms of violence.

He warned drug barons, traffickers, financiers, distributors and dealers that the agency would continue pursuing their operations and financial structures.

“Wherever you hide, whoever sponsors you and however sophisticated your network may be, the long arm of the law will reach you,” he said.

The destruction also drew support from the Lagos State Government. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented at the event by Secretary to the State Government Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, described the destruction of roughly 300 tonnes of narcotics and psychotropic substances as a “huge and sobering reminder” of the scale of the drug threat facing communities and young people.

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos remained committed to working with law enforcement agencies to confront drug abuse and trafficking.

The Nigeria Customs Service also pledged continued cooperation. Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi said the operation demonstrated the importance of interceptions made across Nigeria’s airports, seaports and land borders.

Adeniyi warned that drug trafficking has implications beyond public health, pointing to its potential role in financing violent criminal groups.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, represented by the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Mustapha, similarly assured the NDLEA of continued support for the country’s drug-control efforts.

The latest operation comes against the backdrop of increasingly large drug seizures by the NDLEA.

In April 2025, the agency publicly destroyed about 1.6 million kilogrammes of assorted illicit substances seized across Lagos, Ogun and Oyo, describing that exercise at the time as its largest destruction of seized narcotics.

The August 2026 destruction is smaller by volume but significant in monetary terms, with the NDLEA putting the street value of the substances at more than N301 billion.

Beyond the headline figure, the exercise highlights the continuing challenge facing Nigerian authorities as trafficking networks exploit major transport corridors, airports, seaports and other routes to move illicit substances.

For the NDLEA, permanently removing the seized drugs from circulation is both an enforcement measure and a public statement of intent.

The agency has maintained that disrupting supply must go alongside prevention, treatment and broader community efforts to address drug abuse.

The latest destruction therefore represents not simply the disposal of confiscated substances, but a major blow to the immediate stock of narcotics that the NDLEA says would otherwise have remained available to criminal networks and the illicit market.
