In Lagos politics, where local government chairmen often take years to carve out a reputation, Hon. Vinod Abdul Ganiyu Obasa, the Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government has rewritten the script.

Ranked second-best performing chairman among 20 LGs and 37 LCDAs Chairmen in a performance chart recently compiled by Lagos Reporters, an independent news outlet, Obasa’s recognition is striking not only for its prestige but for the speed at which it was earned.
While his peers had a full year to showcase their leadership, Obasa only assumed full power in December, meaning he achieved this feat in just seven months.
His rise is a story of urgency, vision, and grassroots connection. And it is clear that if he had started alongside other chairmen in July, he would have shattered the roof with his plethora of achievements.
From the outset, Obasa’s administration has been marked by bold empowerment initiatives.
His ₦140 million empowerment programme spread across Agege’s seven wards provided direct financial support to market women, artisans, youths, and small business owners. Each beneficiary received ₦100,000, a lifeline in an economy grappling with inflation and subsidy reforms.
Unlike tokenistic handouts, Obasa insisted on monitoring beneficiaries to ensure sustainability, signaling a commitment to long-term growth rather than short-term applause.
This approach reflects a leader who understands that empowerment must be more than charity—it must be a catalyst for transformation.
Infrastructure renewal has been another defining feature of his leadership. His ₦14.8 billion budget for 2026, themed “Restoration, Innovation, and Development,” prioritized roads, drainage, street lighting, and community facilities.
Already, twelve inner roads including Ajakaiye, Elitana, and Adegbola have been completed in just seven months, with seven more scheduled this year.
Flood-prone areas such as Kadiri Street and Okunola are receiving new drainage systems, while refuse-filled medians along Alfa Nla Capitol Road have been landscaped.
Obasa also procured waste compactor trucks and hired 300 sweepers to keep Agege clean, visibly changing the face of the community.
Education and youth development have been another area where Obasa has left a mark.
Renovating 17 schools, establishing libraries, and distributing desks and furniture are tangible investments in the future.
His provision of 250 GCE forms to disadvantaged students is a direct intervention in breaking cycles of poverty.
Skill acquisition centers have been upgraded to accommodate diverse trades, offering young people pathways out of unemployment.
Notably, 100 youths were trained in filmmaking, with 25 selected for advanced training at Kunle Afolayan’s Film Academy, while others received grants from a ₦100 million youth fund.
Obasa’s passion for youth development extends beyond governance—he is the founder of VINOD Football Academy, nurturing local talent and providing opportunities for international exposure.
Security has not been left behind.
The creation of Agege Crime Fighters (Paramole), a local intelligence and peacekeeping outfit, alongside monthly security meetings, shows Obasa’s understanding that development cannot thrive without safety.
His administration installed 600 streetlights and plans to deploy 25 CCTV cameras in high-risk areas, ensuring that development thrives in a safe environment.
His approach blends community vigilance with structured engagement, reinforcing trust between government and citizens.
Beyond Agege, Obasa’s election as Vice President of the Young Elected Local Officials Network for Africa, and his retention as President of the West African region, positions him as a voice for youth-led governance across the continent.
It is a recognition that his leadership resonates beyond Lagos, offering a model of grassroots transformation that others can emulate.
For a chairman barely seven months into his tenure, this continental relevance is nothing short of extraordinary.
Of course, challenges remain. Empowerment funds must translate into lasting businesses, infrastructure must keep pace with Agege’s swelling population, and political continuity must be secured through transparency and consistency.
But the trajectory is clear: Obasa has shown that local government leadership can be dynamic, responsive, and impactful within months.
His rise is not just Agege’s triumph—it is a lesson in what grassroots governance can achieve when driven by vision and urgency.
And as he himself has vowed, these milestones are only the beginning.
