Okocha unveiled the silver trophy in a video shared on his Instagram page on Thursday, describing the recognition as a special honour.
“Hello, this is JJ Okocha. I’m about to unveil this special award being given to me by FIFA,” the former midfielder said.
“It was given to me for winning the Superior Man of the Match in a World Cup game, Nigeria versus Spain 1998.
“Special thank you to Michelob ULTRA and Copa90 for this amazing recognition. I’m so honoured to receive it.”
The award was presented as part of a joint initiative by Michelob ULTRA and Copa90 to retrospectively recognise exceptional individual performances from FIFA World Cup matches played before the official Player of the Match award was introduced in 2002.
According to the organisers, extensive reviews of historical World Cup archives were conducted to identify players whose performances deserved formal recognition.
The celebrated display came on June 13, 1998, at the Stade de la Beaujoire, where Nigeria stunned Spain in one of the greatest victories in the history of the Super Eagles.
Although Okocha did not find the net, his dazzling dribbling, incisive passing and creativity repeatedly troubled a Spanish side featuring stars such as Fernando Hierro and Raúl González.
Nigeria recovered from an early setback to secure a dramatic win through goals from Mutiu Adepoju, a Spanish own goal and a stunning long-range strike from Sunday Oliseh.
The result propelled the Super Eagles to the top of Group D and remains one of the most iconic moments in Nigerian football history.
While Nigeria’s campaign ended in the Round of 16 against Denmark national football team, Okocha’s masterful performance against Spain cemented his reputation as one of Africa’s most gifted footballers and a global crowd favourite.
