Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised concerns over his participation in the 2027 presidential election, saying he may not be alive to contest the poll while alleging increasing pressure against opposition figures.
Peter Obi made the remarks during an interview on With Chude, hosted by media personality Chude Jideonwo, which was shared on X on Wednesday, 8 July 2026.

The Peter Obi 2027 Election Fear emerged when the former Anambra State governor was asked whether there was a possibility that he might not appear as a candidate in the next presidential election.
“Not even a candidate. I might not even be alive. I’m telling you,” Obi said.
He alleged that activities connected to his personal and professional life had been deliberately frustrated, adding that he believed there was a wider pattern of challenges facing opposition politicians.
“Every single thing I do for a living, this government is frustrating it. Deliberately so. Everything. So, there is even a possibility, if they have the opportunity, I will not be alive,” he said.
However, Obi clarified that he was not making a direct accusation against any individual or government official, but said his comments were based on what he described as his daily experiences.
“It’s not an accusation. I know. I get frustration every day. Because you do things that you think would be normal, it is not normal anymore,” he said.
The presidential hopeful claimed that opposition figures were facing personal attacks and said some people had become reluctant to publicly associate with him because of possible consequences.
“They are attacking everybody who is in opposition personally. I am being attacked personally. Everything,” Obi stated.
He also recalled an alleged incident at an airport where he said his vehicle was locked by officials despite other vehicles being parked in the same area.
“I had a case recently at the airport, where people who work in the airport came and locked my car. And I said, ‘It’s me.’ The person in charge said he doesn’t care,” Obi said.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate further claimed that some supporters had advised him against attending family occasions because of concerns about being publicly linked with him.
“I have people send me invitations and say, ‘My son, my daughter is wedding, but please don’t come,’” he said.
Obi did not provide evidence during the interview to support the allegations, and the Federal Government had not issued a response to the claims at the time of filing this report.

The comments come as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with major political figures positioning themselves and opposition groups preparing for the contest.
