Yerima Shettima independence message urges Nigerians to stay hopeful and united, as the activist reflects on resilience and hints at 2027 political ambitions

Yerima Shettima independence message struck a powerful chord on Nigeria’s 65th anniversary, as the prominent activist and Convener of the Northern Stakeholder Consultative Forum urged citizens to hold onto hope and unity despite the nation’s challenges.

Speaking at a vibrant gathering hosted by the Capacity Movement in Kaduna on Wednesday, Shettima declared that Nigeria’s continued unity, despite decades of upheaval, was “worthy of celebration”.

He said, “Whether we like it or not, the fact that we remain as a nation in our quest to build a united country is worth celebrating.”

Hundreds gathered at the event to reflect on Nigeria’s past and future, with activities ranging from biking and music to interfaith prayers for peace.

The programme, themed around hope and national rebirth, was deliberately held on 1st October to mark the country’s independence in 1960.

The Yerima Shettima independence message was clear: Nigeria’s survival is no accident, but a reflection of the people’s resilience.

“Even when perceived enemies try to disintegrate us, we have stayed together. That shows resilience,” he stated.

While recognising the nation’s setbacks, Shettima praised progress under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, describing the president as a “true democrat and product of struggle”.

He pointed to improving security in the North and greater civic freedoms as signs of cautious progress.

“Today, we enjoy freedoms we didn’t have in the past,” he said. “The economic situation is improving slowly, and insecurity is being addressed with vigour. We must continue to support the government so that it can deliver.”

When asked about mounting calls for him to contest in 2027, Shettima remained measured. “It is too early to politicise the issue. I’ve heard the calls, and I appreciate them. When the time is right, I will respond accordingly.”

However, the day’s highlight came when the Capacity Movement formally endorsed Shettima to run for the Kaduna Central Senatorial seat in 2027.

Its National President, Comrade Shehu Sani Sado, said the endorsement followed “extensive consultation” and reflected Shettima’s alignment with the values of credibility, integrity, and youth engagement.

“Capacity stands for credibility, accountability, projection, ability, creativity, integrity, tenacity, and yielding—and Yerima Shettima ticks all the boxes,” Sado said.

He added that empowering youth and honouring national milestones were vital for Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“It would be a disservice to our forebears if we don’t recognise how far we’ve come. Nobody will build Nigeria for us—we must rise to the task.”

The Yerima Shettima independence message, deeply rooted in optimism and unity, resonated with the crowd, many of whom expressed renewed faith in Nigeria’s future.

“There is light at the end of the tunnel,” Shettima concluded. “No matter how dark it seems, we must continue to run with hope because better days are ahead.”
