The Council of Fulani Chiefs, led by Chairman Mohammed Bambado II, announced a strict ban on night and underage grazing in a statement shared with PUNCH Online on Monday.
The Fulani Chiefs ban night grazing to discourage harmful practices that have fueled violent clashes and farmland destruction.
These measures also restrict the movement of herders across state lines to promote stability in the region.
Bambado stressed that the Fulani community has lived peacefully with local populations in the South-West for over two centuries.
“This ban will help preserve the long-standing peaceful coexistence for future generations,” he said.
The Council’s statement emphasized that herders are also prohibited from carrying firearms or dangerous weapons unrelated to their profession.
These decisive actions aim to restore sanity and peace to a sector long troubled by conflict.
Further, the Council is partnering with the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria Commission to boost regional security.
A sensitization tour will soon launch to educate herders on modern and sustainable grazing methods.
The Fulani Chiefs condemned all forms of banditry, kidnappings, and farmland destruction linked to herders, calling on security agencies to identify and remove criminal elements within their communities.
Additionally, the Council plans to integrate Fulanis from Kwara State into their fold for a unified security approach, considering the porous borders with neighboring states.
In a powerful move to enhance education, the Council advocates reviving nomadic education centers to empower their communities while promoting adherence to Nigerian laws.
Farmers in southern states recently reported fewer attacks from herders, a development attributed to increased dialogue and government actions signaling less tolerance for violence.
