Morocco beat France 6–5 on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw to reach the FIFA U-20 World Cup final, awaiting Colombia or Argentina in the showpiece

Morocco have booked their place in the FIFA U-20 World Cup final after defeating France 6–5 on penalties in a gripping encounter that ended 1–1 after 120 minutes at the Elías Figueroa Brande Stadium in Valparaíso.

The North Africans held their nerve in the dramatic shootout on Wednesday night and now await the winner of Thursday’s semi-final between Colombia and Argentina to know their opponent for the title decider.

Morocco took the lead in the 32nd minute when Yassir Zabiri’s penalty, deflected off French defender Lisandru Olmeta, was ruled as an own goal.

France levelled matters early in the second half through Lucas Michal’s well-taken strike in the 59th minute, setting up a tense battle that stretched deep into extra time.

The Atlas Cubs were dealt a setback when starting goalkeeper Yanis Benchaouch suffered an injury and was replaced by Ibrahim Gomis early in the second period. Despite the disruption, Morocco remained composed defensively.

France’s hopes dimmed in extra time when Rabby Nzingoula was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, handing Morocco the numerical advantage.

Even so, both sides missed late chances — notably Morocco’s Othmane Maamma, who came close to sealing victory before the whistle.

In the ensuing shootout, Morocco converted six of their spot-kicks through Younes El Bahraoui, Ilias Boumassaoudi, Yassir Zabiri, Mohamed Hamony, Saad El Haddad and Byar, while France faltered on their final attempt.

The win sparked jubilant celebrations among Moroccan supporters, whose chants and colours filled the Valparaíso night as their team reached the U-20 showpiece for the first time.

France will now regroup for the third-place play-off, while Morocco prepare for a historic final that could crown a remarkable tournament campaign.
