ASUU Bauchi strike looms as union cites unpaid benefits, poor salaries, and government inaction, warning of potential disruption in six universities

ASUU Bauchi strike is looming as the Academic Staff Union of Universities in the Bauchi Zone warns of a fresh industrial action over unresolved federal demands.

The zone comprises six universities: Federal University, Kashere; Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi; University of Jos, Plateau; Bauchi State University; Plateau State University, Bokkos; and Gombe State University.

Addressing a press conference in Jos, Zonal Coordinator Prof. Timothy Namo expressed disappointment at the government’s failure to resolve outstanding issues, despite previous warnings and a two-week strike.

He criticised the proposed salary increase as “a drop in the ocean” and rejected the offer, urging the government to take urgent, concrete action.

Prof. Namo also questioned the government’s commitment to education, citing statistics showing a significant rise in federal and state revenue allocation, yet persistent underfunding of universities.

He argued that partial payment of promotion arrears and delayed release of benefits were insufficient to boost confidence among academics.

“The remaining days to the expiration of the one-month window must be tactfully and judiciously used to holistically resolve all outstanding issues to uplift the living conditions of academics in Nigeria,” Namo said.

He called on traditional rulers, students, civil society organisations, and the National Assembly to press the government to act promptly.

ASUU Bauchi Strike could disrupt academic activities across the six universities in the zone if the government fails to meet demands for improved salaries, better working conditions, and the release of unpaid benefits.

The union’s National Executive Council had earlier urged resolution of all issues within ten days of the one-month negotiation window.
