Customers react as alleged ₦1.5 billion fraud case emerges at Lotus Bank

Lotus Bank fraud scandal triggers panic after alleged ₦1.5bn diversion by staff sparks fears over internal controls and customer security

Lotus Bank is facing heightened scrutiny after revelations that an internal staff member is allegedly linked to the diversion of more than ₦1.5 billion in customer-related funds, a development that has unsettled depositors and raised concerns over internal financial safeguards within the institution.

Court filings indicate that the bank is currently pursuing recovery of ₦1,552,130,998.85 allegedly traced to suspicious transactions connected to an official identified as Abdulkarim Arome Mohammed, who worked in the Financial Control Department.

The alleged incident has triggered anxiety among customers who fear lapses in digital banking security and oversight mechanisms.

According to an affidavit submitted by a fraud investigation officer, Sunday Gbadebo, the suspect is accused of exploiting privileged system access to redirect funds linked to customer profits into unauthorised accounts across multiple financial institutions.

Investigators also said the transactions involved Mudarabah profit allocations tied to non-interest banking operations.

The bank further alleged that a detailed internal review uncovered a wider network of questionable transfers spanning January 2023 to February 2026, with some funds reportedly traced to accounts associated with individuals connected to the suspect.

The matter has since expanded into a multi-party legal dispute as additional defendants are joined in the ongoing recovery effort.

The development has intensified public concern, particularly among customers who rely on digital banking platforms, as questions emerge over how such large-scale internal transactions went undetected for an extended period.

Industry analysts warn that the case could affect confidence in newer financial institutions operating within Nigeria’s competitive banking sector.

Lotus Bank, which commenced operations in 2021 and is headquartered in Lagos, has yet to issue a public statement addressing the latest court proceedings.

Efforts to reach the bank’s communications department were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

The Federal High Court in Lagos has adjourned further hearing on the case to June 16, 2026, as investigations and recovery efforts continue.
