23-year-old Nigerian medical student dies in Ukraine airstrike tragedy

A 23-year-old medical student, Ms Nnani Adaobi Marian, a final-year student of Kharkiv National Medical University, has reportedly died after sustaining severe injuries from a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine, on 29 June 2026.

Ms Nnani Adaobi Marian was among civilians affected when guided aerial bombs struck the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv, according to accounts shared by Ms Kateryna Bohuslavska, also known as “Kate from Kharkiv,” who has been documenting developments related to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The Nigerian medical student Ukraine airstrike death occurred while Ms Marian and her close friend, Ms Fatima Huseynova, were reportedly heading for a graduation photoshoot ahead of their scheduled diploma ceremony.

Ms Bohuslavska stated that Ms Marian was initially treated in Kharkiv before being transferred to Germany for further medical care, where she later died despite sustained efforts by medical teams to save her life.

In a tribute statement, Kharkiv National Medical University described Ms Marian as a diligent and promising student who had demonstrated academic excellence and commitment to medical training since enrolling in 2020.

The institution noted that she participated in international academic programmes, including internships at the University of Cambridge in 2024 and Biruni University in Turkey in 2025, highlighting her growing professional development in the medical field.

“She was a bright, sincere and friendly person, distinguished by her thirst for knowledge and desire to help others,” the university said, adding that her passing represents a painful loss to the academic community.

The tragedy has drawn renewed attention to the human cost of the ongoing war in Ukraine, particularly its impact on international students pursuing higher education in affected regions.

Ms Marian was due to graduate in 2026 before the incident cut short her academic journey.
