Atiku Abubakar ADC primary victory confirmed as former vice president defeats rivals in Sokoto presidential primary exercise
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Monday, 25 May 2026, emerged victorious in the presidential primary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) held in Sokoto State, after securing an overwhelming majority of votes cast during the exercise.

The Atiku Abubakar ADC primary victory was announced at the party secretariat in Sokoto by the state presidential primary collation officer, Prof. Aminu Abubakar, who disclosed that 69,434 votes were cast from a total of 69,871 registered voters.
According to the official results, Atiku Abubakar polled 68,823 votes to defeat other contenders in the contest, reinforcing his political influence within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Alhaji Muhammad Hayatudeen secured 319 votes, while former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi recorded 292 votes in the exercise.
The primary election attracted several prominent political figures and party stakeholders, including former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Deputy Governor Manir Muhammad Dan’iya and the state chairman of the ADC, Abdullahi Maigwandu.
Observers described the Atiku Abubakar ADC primary victory as a powerful showing of support for the former vice president within the party structure in Sokoto State, particularly as political alignments continue to evolve ahead of the next election cycle.
