Ere Asalatu performance at Celestial Church event sparks outrage among Muslim community

The Islamic singer’s appearance at a Celestial Church event has triggered debate online, reviving questions about religious boundaries and interfaith entertainment in Nigeria

Islamic singer Alhaji Abdulkabir Bukola Alayande, popularly known as Ere Asalatu, has sparked controversy among some Muslim social media users after a video of his performance at a Celestial Church event circulated online, prompting debate over religious boundaries and the place of interfaith entertainment in Nigeria.

The Ere Asalatu church performance has generated mixed reactions, with some Muslim commentators questioning the appropriateness of an Islamic musician appearing at a Christian religious gathering, while others have defended the singer’s participation as an example of Nigeria’s long-standing tradition of cultural and religious interaction.

The specific date and location of the recent Celestial Church event could not be independently established from reliable public reports reviewed for this story.

The circulating video, however, has renewed attention on Ere Asalatu’s career and his previous appearances at events involving people from different religious backgrounds.

Ere Asalatu is recognised as an Islamic singer whose music is largely rooted in Yoruba language and culture.

A February 2026 interview with The PUNCH identified him as Alhaji Abdulkabir Bukola Alayande, an Islamic singer who has been married since 2000.

His career has also included appearances in settings where religious and cultural identities overlap.

In 2017, The Nation reported that Ere Asalatu was among the performers announced for the Ijebu Praise Concert, an interdenominational event that brought together Christian gospel and Muslim singers.

The musician has also previously performed at a Celestial Church programme in Ibadan.

A City People report on the Onala Parish of the Celestial Church of Christ noted that Ere Asalatu was among several entertainers who had headlined programmes at the church.

That history adds important context to the latest online reaction.

The appearance of a Muslim musician at a Christian gathering is not entirely unprecedented in Ere Asalatu’s career or in Nigeria’s entertainment culture, where artistes frequently perform at weddings, birthdays, thanksgiving services, harvest celebrations and other events that may attract audiences from different faiths.

The latest controversy, however, appears to have been driven by the religious setting of the performance and the perception among some viewers that an Islamic singer should maintain a clearer separation between his professional entertainment activities and Christian worship spaces.

Others have taken a more accommodating view, arguing that an artiste’s participation in a social or cultural event does not necessarily represent a change in personal faith.

Nigeria’s music industry has long provided a meeting point for religious communities.

Christian gospel artistes have performed alongside Muslim musicians at interfaith events, while traditional and popular entertainers often appear at celebrations hosted by people of different religious backgrounds.

In 2024, for example, a video showing gospel musician Yinka Ayefele performing alongside Ere Asalatu at an event generated a similar mix of surprise, criticism and praise online.

Some viewers questioned the religious context, while others celebrated the performance as a display of interfaith unity.

The debate also reflects the distinctive nature of Yoruba religious and cultural life, where music, language and communal celebrations frequently cross formal religious boundaries.

Ere Asalatu himself has previously spoken publicly about questions involving faith and everyday life.

In a 2022 interview, he said he saw nothing wrong with Muslims acknowledging the Gregorian New Year, explaining that the calendar is widely used in daily activities while stressing that celebrations should remain within appropriate limits.

For some of his critics, however, the latest video has raised a more fundamental question about the responsibilities of religious musicians and the expectations attached to their public identities.

The criticism remains largely an online reaction rather than a formally organised response from a recognised Muslim body.

No major Islamic organisation has been identified as having officially condemned the singer over the performance, and there is no verified public statement from Ere Asalatu directly addressing the latest controversy.

That distinction is important as social media reactions can sometimes give the impression of a wider religious consensus than actually exists.

The controversy nevertheless highlights the delicate balance Nigerian entertainers often navigate when their artistic careers intersect with religious identity.

For Ere Asalatu, whose musical profile is closely associated with Islamic songs and Yoruba cultural expression, the latest backlash has placed his public image at the centre of a familiar but sensitive conversation about faith, artistic freedom and interreligious engagement.
