The historic viewing event took place at the VIP Lounge of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium and was jointly organised by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development and the Polish Embassy in Nigeria.
Guests described the gathering as one of the most significant sports diplomacy events held in the Federal Capital Territory this year, combining football, networking, entertainment and international cooperation.
On the pitch, Nigeria opened the scoring through Terem Moffi after an assist from Moses Simon. Poland responded with an equaliser from Kacper Potulski, who finished a move created by Nicola Zalewski.
Super Eagles regained their advantage when Paul Onuachu converted a penalty. However, Poland fought back once more as Wisniewski struck late to secure a deserved draw and ensure both countries ended the contest level.
Beyond the football, the Nigeria-Poland Unity Watch Party showcased the growing relationship between the two nations.
Guests praised the initiative for promoting peace, cultural understanding and youth engagement through sport.
Among those in attendance were His Excellency Philip Shaibu, Director General of the National Institute for Sports; Engr. Cornelius O. Adebayo, Chief Executive Officer of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority; and Senator Gbenga Elegbeleye, Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League.
The event also attracted ambassadors from several European Union countries as well as former Nigerian internationals Victor Ikpeba, Samson Siasia and Waidi Akanni.
Representatives of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, were also present.
Speaking after the event, Adeboye described the evening as a powerful demonstration of sport’s ability to unite people across national, cultural and religious boundaries.
“Tonight was beyond football. It was about friendship, unity, diplomacy, networking and strengthening relationships through sports. We are happy with the turnout, the atmosphere and the positive energy we witnessed here today,” Adeboye said.
The presidential aide added that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in the areas of youth development, international cooperation and grassroots sports advancement.
“Mr. President believes strongly in using sports to empower young people and promote unity. What we witnessed tonight shows the power of football in bringing nations and people together peacefully,” he said.
Cygan welcomed the success of the collaboration and expressed optimism about future partnerships between both countries.
“This was truly a beautiful evening. We saw friendship, respect, unity and a shared passion for football. We are very proud of this collaboration and look forward to even stronger relationships between Poland and Nigeria,” the ambassador said.
A notable highlight of the evening was the interaction between diplomats, policymakers and football icons, creating opportunities for future collaboration beyond sport.
