Speaking on Thursday after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented the state’s 2025 budget, Obasa asserted that his focus remains on strengthening the All Progressives Congress (APC) and mobilising support for the party.

Clarifying misconceptions

Obasa stated that his mobilisation efforts, particularly through the Mandate platform, have been misinterpreted by detractors as a personal aspiration for the governorship seat.

“Becoming governor is secondary; it’s not something I’ve seriously considered,” he said, adding that his primary concern is building the APC’s strength ahead of future elections.

He also dismissed claims of seeking validation from prominent Lagos families to bolster a potential candidacy, emphasising his commitment to his Agege constituency.

A budget for sustainability

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s 2025 budget proposal, themed “Budget of Sustainability,” amounts to ₦3.006 trillion, reflecting a commitment to sustainable development. The budget includes:

  • Recurrent expenditure: ₦1.239 trillion (41%)
  • Capital expenditure: ₦1.766 trillion (59%)
  • Total revenue projection: ₦2.597 trillion
  • Deficit financing: ₦408.9 billion

The proposal aims to address Lagosians’ socio-economic needs amidst national economic challenges. Sanwo-Olu urged citizens to remain hopeful as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration implements recovery strategies.
Assembly’s Role and Assurance

Obasa pledged that the House of Assembly would scrutinise the budget thoroughly to ensure it prioritises Lagosians’ interests. He assured Sanwo-Olu of the Assembly’s support while maintaining the independence of the legislative arm.

Call for unity and focus

Obasa commended his colleagues for their dedication to the people, highlighting their unity and determination. He also called on APC members to remain focused and committed to the party’s goals ahead of the 2027 elections.

“This House will never be intimidated or distracted,” Obasa said, reaffirming the Assembly’s resilience and commitment to Lagosians’ welfare.
