President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, announced on Monday night during the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony in Abuja that April 7 has been designated as National Police Day. This declaration comes as part of the administration’s commitment to revitalizing the nation’s police force.
In his address, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of overhauling the institutional mentality and memory of police officers to transform the force into a modern, professional, and accountable institution. He highlighted ongoing reforms initiated since assuming office in 2023, aiming to equip police personnel with the expertise needed for modern policing.
“As part of our tradition of honoring the Police Force, we have approved the adoption of the first week of April as Police Week. Furthermore, April 7th is hereby declared National Police Day in Nigeria,” President Tinubu stated.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by the police amid Nigeria’s security threats, President Tinubu commended the dedication and valour of the force, emphasizing their role in safeguarding citizens’ lives and livelihoods. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to investing in training and capacity-building as part of comprehensive reforms to rejuvenate the police force.
“Investing in training and capacity-building is crucial,” President Tinubu emphasized. “We don’t see you as just the shields of the nation; we are here to humanize you.”
