Former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari were in attendance at the inaugural Council of State meeting under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The meeting took place at the State House Council Chambers in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, marking a significant gathering of Nigeria’s top leaders.
Joining them virtually were former Heads of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) and General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd). Also present were governors from Abia, Adamawa, and Akwa Ibom States, reflecting the broad representation of Nigeria’s leadership at the meeting.
The Council of State, chaired by the president and vice president, is composed of all living former Heads of State and Presidents, former Chief Justices of Nigeria and the incumbent, the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, all state governors, and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF). This influential body plays a crucial role in advising the executive on key policy decisions.
This meeting is the first of its kind under President Tinubu, following the last Council of State meeting held on February 10, 2023, under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
That session focused on critical national issues, including the 2023 general elections, the new Naira policy, and the persistent fuel scarcity affecting the country.
