Red Hood series cancelled by DC Comics after one issue; retailers to receive full credit, including sold copies, due to concerns over public commentary

Red Hood Series has been abruptly cancelled by DC Comics just hours after the release of its highly anticipated first issue, in a rare move that sent shockwaves through both retailers and fans.

Originally launched as a mature-rated, monthly title starring Jason Todd — the former Robin turned anti-hero — the Red Hood series was set to explore gritty, adult themes within the mainstream DC Universe.

The debut issue, released September 10, 2025, also featured Helena Bertinelli, aka Huntress, as both characters sought new beginnings in Louisiana.

However, by the evening of its launch, DC Comics had issued a formal statement to comic book retailers announcing the immediate cancellation of all future issues.

This includes Red Hood 2 and Red Hood 3, which were scheduled for release in October and November respectively.

The company also confirmed that full credit would be issued for all copies of Red Hood 1, even those already sold to customers.

“DC Comics cancels existing orders for Red Hood 2 and Red Hood 3, and any orders for future issues of the series,” read the official notice. “DC Comics will credit retailers for all invoiced copies of Red Hood 1, inclusive of copies that may have already been sold.”

The cancellation comes amid online controversy related to statements made by individuals associated with the series. In response to inquiries about the abrupt decision, DC released a short but firm statement:

“At DC Comics, we place the highest value on our creators and community and affirm the right to peaceful, individual expression of personal viewpoints. Posts or public comments that can be viewed as promoting hostility or violence are inconsistent with DC’s standards of conduct.”

While DC did not specify who or what prompted the reversal, the move casts a spotlight on the balancing act publishers face in managing public expectations, creative freedom, and corporate ethics — particularly for mature-rated content within established franchises.

Red Hood series had been announced in July 2025 as DC’s first ongoing 17+ title set within its primary continuity, a bold creative direction that paired acclaimed horror writer Gretchen Felker-Martin with artist Jeff Spokes and cover artist Taurin Clarke.

Though it lasted only a single issue, the now-cancelled Red Hood series may go down as one of the shortest-lived — and most debated — titles in recent DC history.
