Patience Ozokwo reveals she earned ₦2,000 for her first Nollywood role

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwo, popularly known as Mama G, has revealed that she earned ₦2,000 for one of her earliest movie roles, offering a revealing glimpse into the modest financial beginnings of her acting career during Nollywood’s formative years.

Ozokwo shared the recollection during a recent livestream conversation with comedian Carter Efe, where she reflected on the early stages of her journey in the Nigerian film industry and how her earnings gradually increased as she took on more roles.

The actress explained that her next payment rose to ₦5,000, a figure she remembered as significant at the time. Her earnings subsequently increased to ₦8,000 before reaching ₦15,000 for another role.

For Ozokwo, those amounts carried a very different meaning from what they might suggest today. She recalled a period when money was tight and even a relatively small payment could make a meaningful difference.

Her account provides a human perspective on the early economics of Nollywood, an industry that developed rapidly through home-video productions before evolving into the more commercially structured cinema and streaming market seen today.

Ozokwo’s career began before she became one of the most recognisable faces of Nigerian cinema.

She worked as a broadcaster with Radio Nigeria and developed her acting profile through television and stage work before becoming widely known for her film performances.

Her breakthrough came with the 1999 film Authority, after which she became closely associated with powerful, often difficult characters that helped establish her reputation with Nigerian audiences.

She has since appeared in more than 100 films and remained a prominent figure across several generations of Nollywood.

The contrast between her early earnings and her later status illustrates the remarkable distance her career has travelled.

What began with payments measured in thousands of naira eventually developed into a decades-long career that earned her major industry recognition.

In May 2026, Ozokwo was among four veteran performers honoured with an AMVCA Icon Award alongside Joke Silva, Nkem Owoh and Afeez Oyetoro.

The recognition celebrated the lasting contribution of the veterans to Nigerian screen culture.

Her recent comments also echo a wider conversation she has had about the financial realities facing Nigerian actors.

In April, Ozokwo argued that the absence of a strong royalty system leaves many performers without continuing income from films after their initial appearance fees have been paid.

That issue gives added context to her recollection of earning ₦2,000 at the beginning of her career.

While the figure belongs to an earlier period of the industry, her comments underline how dramatically the business of Nigerian film has changed, as well as the financial challenges that have continued to concern performers.

Ozokwo’s story is therefore not simply about the value of an old payment. It is also a reflection on persistence, changing industry economics and the long road from modest beginnings to becoming one of Nollywood’s enduring screen figures.

The veteran actress continues to work in the industry. She is part of the cast of IKENGA: The Last Festival, a new Nollywood film scheduled for nationwide cinema release on August 21, 2026, alongside Pete Edochie, Nkem Owoh, Beverly Osu, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Zubby Michael, Regina Daniels and Destiny Etiko.

For audiences who know Ozokwo primarily as the formidable Mama G, her latest revelation offers a more intimate view of the woman behind the character.

Her journey from a ₦2,000 early payment to decades of recognition remains a striking reminder of how persistence can outlast the limitations of a young industry.
