Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo was sent off shortly before half-time for a reckless foul on Merino, but Trevoh Chalobah’s header had still put the hosts in front early in the second half.
Merino’s 59th-minute leveller ensured Arsenal avoided defeat in a clash defined by aggression, intensity and VAR drama.
The result keeps Arsenal five points ahead of champions Manchester City and six clear of third-placed Chelsea.
Yet the Gunners were left frustrated at missing the chance to tighten their grip on the title race, while Chelsea were relieved to escape with a point after playing nearly an hour with 10 men.
Both sides arrived buoyed by midweek Champions League victories, but the positivity quickly gave way to a bruising contest littered with heavy tackles and bookings.
Arsenal, missing injured centre-back William Saliba, endured a turbulent first half as tackles flew in and tempers flared.
Zubimendi hauled down Reece James, Cucurella clattered into Bukayo Saka, Mosquera flattened Joao Pedro and Riccardo Calafiori dragged down James, setting the tone for a ferocious first 45 minutes.
Chelsea’s 18-year-old prodigy Estevao Willian, fresh from a starring European display, wasted a golden chance by firing over from close range.
The flashpoint came in the 38th minute when Caicedo landed a dangerous challenge on Merino’s ankle.
Referee Simon Hooper initially showed a yellow card but upgraded it to red after a VAR review — Chelsea’s sixth sending-off of the season.
Minutes later, Hincapie’s elbow on Chalobah sparked further fury from the home side, though this time no sanction followed.
Chelsea nonetheless struck first, capitalising on their own set-piece prowess.
James curled in a near-post corner in the 48th minute, and Chalobah rose highest to glance a deft header into the far corner for the Blues’ ninth set-piece goal of the campaign.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta responded by introducing Martin Ødegaard and Noni Madueke — the latter loudly jeered on his return to his former club — and the impact was immediate.
Saka skipped past Cucurella with a dazzling run before delivering a precise cross for Merino, who powered home a close-range header for his fourth goal of the season.
Arsenal pushed for a winner in a breathless finale, with goalkeeper Robert Sánchez twice denying Saka and Merino, but the leaders could not complete the comeback.

The draw extends Arsenal’s unbeaten run to 17 matches in all competitions, while Chelsea have now gone seven without defeat under Enzo Maresca.
