NiMet weather forecast has warned Nigerians of heavy rains, thunderstorms, and a high risk of flooding across several states from Sunday to Tuesday.

In its weather outlook released in Abuja, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency predicted moderate rains in Jigawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Borno, and Adamawa on Sunday morning, with thunderstorms expected later in the day.

The agency raised concern about a high possibility of floods in Kebbi, Gombe, and Bauchi, while states in the central region such as Plateau, Niger, and the Federal Capital Territory would experience intermittent rains.

Southern states including Enugu, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, and Osun are also expected to see cloudy skies and moderate rainfall, with Osun flagged for potential flooding.

On Monday, NiMet projected thunderstorms in northern states like Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Katsina, and Borno, while the central region including Niger and Benue would see light showers.

Southern states such as Ogun, Oyo, and Bayelsa were forecast to receive light rains later in the day.

By Tuesday, the outlook showed thunderstorms over Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, and Adamawa, with continued rainfall across the central and southern regions.

NiMet urged citizens not to drive during heavy rain, to secure loose objects, and to disconnect electrical appliances.

Farmers were advised to avoid applying fertiliser before rains to prevent leaching, while vulnerable groups were encouraged to use warm clothing against night chills.

Airline operators were told to obtain airport-specific weather reports for effective planning.

“Residents are strongly advised to remain informed through NiMet’s updates and take necessary precautions,” the agency stated, emphasizing the need for caution in flood-prone areas.
