Sanwo-Olu honours Murtala Muhammed at a wreath-laying ceremony in Ikoyi to mark 50 years since the late leader’s death
Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday attended a wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the passing of late Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, GCFR.

The ceremony was held on February 6, 2026, at the late leader’s cenotaph in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu joined family members, dignitaries and government officials to honour the memory of General Murtala Muhammed, whose brief leadership left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s political history.
Also present at the solemn event was Senator Daisy Danjuma, wife of retired Lieutenant General Theophilus Danjuma.
The daughter of the late General and Chief Executive Officer of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, Dr. Aisha Muhammed Oyebode, attended the ceremony alongside her husband, Gbenga Oyebode.
The Chairman of Ikoyi Obalende Local Council Development Area, Hon. Bola Oladunjoye, and other senior government officials were also in attendance.
The wreath-laying formed the central feature of the ceremony, as participants paid tribute to General Murtala Muhammed’s service, leadership and enduring legacy.

The commemoration marked five decades since the former Head of State was assassinated, a moment that remains a defining chapter in Nigeria’s history.
