In a message shared at the start of the Lenten period, Trump underscored the enduring significance of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, describing them as practices woven into the fabric of American history and identity.
“As the holy season of Lent begins, we are reminded that the practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving have been foundational to our strength from the earliest days of our national story,” he wrote.
Trump referenced early American colonists who turned to prayer and fasting during the Revolutionary War, framing those acts of faith as defining moments in the nation’s development.
He also praised the compassion and generosity demonstrated by churches, hospitals and charitable institutions over the centuries.
“These righteous acts of faith over the centuries have always stood at the centre of our identity, our heritage, and our way of life,” the statement added.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent in many Christian traditions, a solemn season observed through reflection, spiritual discipline and charitable giving ahead of Easter.
Trump’s message comes amid the ongoing observance of Ramadan by Muslims worldwide.
