Although hosted in Lagos, the competition is a national event that draws participation from across the country.

The 2026 grand finale, held at Greensprings School, featured contestants from Abuja, Taraba, Ondo and Lagos states.

Speaking on the initiative, the President of the Rotary Club of Victoria Island East, Mokesioluwa Seun-Adedamola, emphasised the club’s dedication to promoting basic education and literacy, one of the core focus areas of Rotary International.

The competition is an affiliate of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States, with the Nigerian edition serving as a qualifying platform for young spellers to represent the country on the global stage. Notably, this year’s winner emerged from a school in Ondo State.

The Scripps Spelling Bee Nigeria is organised by Young Educators Africa in partnership with Lucid Education Initiative, Rotary District 9112, and the Rotary Club of Victoria Island East.

Other key collaborators include the American Business Council and the Nigerian-American Chamber of Commerce.

Lead sponsors of the event include Checkers Custard, Maltina and Kids FM 101.7.
