Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo explains his John 3:16 tattoo, describing it as a unique way to spread the Gospel amid mixed online reactions

Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo, renowned relationship coach and head of David Christian Centre, has defended his Bible-inspired tattoo, describing it as a creative method of evangelism.

The tattoo, revealed in a video posted on Okonkwo’s Instagram page on Saturday, bears the scripture John 3:16 in Roman numerals — “III: XVI.”

The clip, released in celebration of his 50th birthday, features a voice-over of the verse, which is widely considered central to the Christian Gospel.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Okonkwo addressed reactions online, writing, “My religious brothers and sisters were busy judging over tattoo; they didn’t notice that the gospel (John 3:16) was preached to millions in 24hrs by almost all blogs.”

He added that a detailed discussion on the tattoo would take place on Monday night, inviting followers to a praise party and thanksgiving service at David Christian Centre’s Lagos mainland and island branches.

The unveiling of the tattoo drew mixed responses. Some critics questioned the appropriateness of a pastor sporting a tattoo, citing biblical injunctions. One user, @iamqneth, commented: “The Bible says we should not make a mark on our skin.

Well, I know that the Bible hasn’t changed, and God’s word hasn’t changed either, so all I can say is hmmmm!” Another, @sailorojay, added: “It baffles me.

Does this pastor not know it’s a sin to tattoo his skin? As a pastor, you should be leading members in the right path.”

Others offered more measured perspectives. @v_olarinde wrote: “All things are lawful… but not all things edify. I respect you so much, sir, but this doesn’t edify.”

Many followers, however, praised the tattoo as a bold act of faith. @nnekaekpe commented: “Tatted!!!!! ‘And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.’”

Another, @sheunnatural, joked: “Now I can get my tattoo. My mentor gbe mi debe,” meaning “My mentor got me there.”

Okonkwo, known for his contemporary approach to relationship and marriage teachings and his youth-friendly messaging, continued to share moments from his birthday celebrations, captioning one post: “Still celebrating the big Five 0.”

Addressing the debate, the pastor urged followers to remain calm, saying, “Those who want to hear about tattoos, drink water and relax. We will talk on Monday after the parties this weekend.”

By framing the tattoo as a creative and unconventional way to spread the Gospel, Okonkwo has turned a point of controversy into a broader conversation about evangelism in modern times.
