Richard Akinnola Foundation widows support initiative gives N3.8m and health insurance to journalists’ widows at 16th anniversary

Founder of the Richard Akinnola Foundation, Mr Richard Akinnola, on Sunday led the disbursement of N3.8 million to 38 widows of journalists and activists in Lagos, as part of activities marking the organisation’s 16th anniversary.

The Richard Akinnola Foundation widows support initiative was carried out during a ceremony held at Airport Hotel in Ikeja, where beneficiaries also received renewed annual health insurance coverage.

Mr Richard Akinnola described the anniversary outreach as one of the foundation’s key signature programmes, noting that beyond publicised events, the organisation consistently provides assistance to widows facing challenges such as rent, school fees, and daily living expenses.

Mr Richard Akinnola added that some beneficiaries reside outside Lagos and are supported through bank transfers, ensuring continuity of care regardless of location.

The founder also recalled that the foundation distributed blood pressure monitoring devices to all widows in the previous year, reflecting a growing focus on healthcare support.

In a candid moment during the event, Mr Richard Akinnola acknowledged the increasing financial strain of sustaining the initiative over 16 years.

Mr Richard Akinnola appealed for greater backing from individuals and corporate organisations to maintain and expand the programme.

Mr Richard Akinnola stated that generosity is driven more by compassion than wealth, emphasising the importance of empathy in supporting vulnerable groups.

Established on 10 April 2010, the foundation was created to provide relief to widows and children of journalists and activists, whose professions often involve significant personal risk.

Observers say the sustained efforts of the foundation highlight the enduring need for structured support systems for families affected by the hazards associated with journalism and activism.
