A Nigerian woman alleges a wrongful rape conviction after her brother received a 15-year jail term in Ogun State, calling for case review

A Nigerian woman, Oladeinde Adeola Esther, has publicly appealed for intervention following the conviction and imprisonment of her brother over an alleged rape case in Ogun State, claiming the judgment represents a wrongful rape conviction and a denial of fair hearing.

Oladeinde Adeola Esther made the appeal through posts shared on her X account, where she stated that her brother has remained in custody since December 2020 after a disagreement involving their landlord’s daughter reportedly escalated into a criminal allegation.

According to Oladeinde Adeola Esther, the dispute allegedly arose from issues linked to a monthly thrift contribution arrangement between the parties.

Oladeinde Adeola Esther claimed that tensions following the disagreement culminated in an accusation of rape against her brother, accompanied by threats that influence would be used against him.

Oladeinde Adeola Esther further alleged that despite sustained efforts by family members to contest the claims, an Ogun State court recently sentenced her brother to 15 years’ imprisonment.

The woman insisted that the convict was not given adequate opportunity to present a full defence during trial proceedings, maintaining that her brother remains innocent of the offence.

In an emotional public appeal, Oladeinde Adeola Esther called on Nigerians and social commentator VeryDarkMan to help draw attention to the case and facilitate an independent review.

“He is suffering for a crime he did not commit,” Oladeinde Adeola Esther wrote, urging relevant authorities and advocacy organisations to re-examine the circumstances surrounding the conviction.

As of the time of filing this report, the Ogun State Police Command and judicial authorities had not issued any official response to the allegations circulating online.

Legal practitioners note that individuals convicted by Nigerian courts retain the constitutional right to challenge judgments through appellate courts, where concerns relating to evidence, procedure, or fairness may be reassessed.

The case has since sparked intense debate across social media platforms, with commentators raising broader concerns about due process, sensitive criminal prosecutions, and the importance of safeguarding justice through transparent judicial review
